What is Indentured Servitude Today and 10 Reasons to Escape It

I’ve heard so many people ask me how a normal job isn’t fulfilling. I usually retort with this fact: You’re busy doing someone else’s dirty work, fulfilling their dream, on their time. To me, it’s indentured servitude today in the 21st century.

While it technically isn’t, given that no one’s forcing anyone to work for anyone, when you add in variables like high rent, gas, and food costs in today’s crony corporatist environment, the dirty work you do each day just to survive is definitely modern-day indentured servitude.

When you really connect the dots and see how corporate lobbyists make deals with politicians to slap down new regulations to discourage competition which allows for oligopolies if we’re lucky, now you know that you’re nothing but a pawn to Corporation A that you work for.

A Counterargument

Because what if Corporation A in your field is one of about five major chain corporations?

And we wonder why prices are out of control in virtually every single field. A little bit of wheeling and dealing with elected officials and bam, it all makes perfect sense and it gives me a desire to do something, which is why I named this blog Ditch Corporate America.

Because I truly believe each of you reading this text are hardworking people looking for a way out of the rat race so you no longer have to solidify your status as societal drones carrying the litter of corporate oligarchs on your shoulder while you make a fraction of what you’re worth with backbreaking labor which you practically are forced to sacrifice the one thing that holds your mind, body, and soul unique: Your passions.

Then, I’m usually met with this statement: “Yeah, well, payday and benefits make my work fulfilling.”

Oh, come on, who the hell are you kidding?

Didn’t you complain to me last week it was Sunday night, the night before yet another dragging week at the office, whatever that office may be?

If you found fulfillment in your work you would want to be there, working. If you don’t, you’re going to wake up unenthusiastic. Sets up for a pretty piss poor day in my opinion, waking up dreading work.

After such counterarguments, I’m met with, “That’s just the way it is, Todd.”

Does anyone else find that statement annoying?

I’m sure you heard that from a parent and now you’re doing your own kid a disservice by telling them the same thing.

A Society of Dependents

I remember one time when I was at the dreaded warehouse one of my co-workers complained about a salesperson who literally sold half of that day’s entire order tree—out of about six salespeople.

The supervisor came around and said, “Well we need to thank her because if it wasn’t for our salespeople, we wouldn’t have jobs.”

Yes, we’ve sunk so far in society we’ve become dependent on other people to simply work a job we never dreamed of working at the age we’re at.

We need to thank her because if it wasn’t for the salespeople, we wouldn’t have jobs?

Sounds like most of America; we get a job and work that job before getting complacent. Do you realize how many people I’ve seen over the years state the place they’ve been at for five, ten, fifteen years or longer state their current job was supposed to be temporary before life happened?

I don’t envy these people.

Not to mention hardly a soul realizes there’s a way out and until about a year ago, I didn’t realize the kind of earning potential one can make as a self-employed internet marketer in a variety of fields until I did my own research.

Of course, such research took me to Wealthy Affiliate and I’ve been a member ever since, but what are some reasons as to why you should Ditch Corporate America?

10 Reasons Why You Should Escape

1) Wake up on your own time. How many of us are confined to waking up at unusual hours? Staying up past unusual hours? Well, if you Ditch Corporate America, you can say ‘good-bye’ to the alarm clock. You now control when you wake up.

2) Set your own work hours. When I was at the warehouse my shift was 2pm until Whenever. I didn’t know when the hell I’d get out of the warehouse. It would either be tonight or tomorrow morning. Even if we were done at 3am, we had to return at 2pm. There were weeks when we were pretty much living there.

3) Be your own boss. Hate every boss you’ve ever worked for or do you just dislike having to answer to someone else? Well, by starting your own internet marketing business you can now become your own boss. You answer only to you and you only.

4) Work on your passion. Hate work because what you’re working on isn’t something you’re passionate about? Or, is it just meaningless and lacking purpose? You might be looking at corporate numbers all day when you have to impress an entire board room just to keep your job. It would be so much better to be able to put that time and effort into something you’re passionate about.

5) Put people before profits. Does your company care only about its profit margin and view every single customer as a paycheck? The best thing about internet marketing, especially blogging is that your content can help, motivate, and inspire others. Why not start putting people before profits, because when you do so profits will begin to seep in.

6) Work anywhere you want. Are you a beach or mountains and forests kind of person? Regardless, an internet marketing profession can mean that you work while on vacation, making passive income while you travel. Even if you’re not traveling, you can work from home, coffee shops, libraries, or anywhere else you find comfort.

7) Live the lifestyle you want. I love getting up and getting a workout in. I also love getting a second workout in while making each meal a mini-event. Regardless of your lifestyle, you don’t have to curtail it any longer if you’re no longer in the rat race.

8) Increase your cash flows. Did you know that there are many ways to earn money online? You can sell your own products, affiliate market, drop-ship, there’s a plethora of opportunity out there. Heck, if you publish a book and open publish to different countries, think of how many potential cash flows just opened up. Say you publish on ten different online stores that have access to fifteen countries. That alone is 150 cash flows.

9) Look forward to going to work. How many of us hate that pre-work feeling? I know, it blows, because we simply aren’t finding passion in our work. Now, if we found passion in our work, how many of us would want to go to work each day? Probably all of us. Hey, I’d gladly put twelve hours a day in for things I’m passionate about rather than things I’m doing simply to get by.

10) Spend more time with family and friends. How many of us are missing family and friend time because of work? Might be a good deal of us. So, with a laptop gig and passive income, it’ll open up time to spend with your friends, family, and relatives. I think that’s probably the greatest trade-off of them all.

  1. I think it all comes down to self-awareness. Some people are made for the corporate world while others are not or simply lying to themselves. I know that I myself am not the corporate type so I left the rat race and am enjoying doing what I love to do.

Internet marketing indeed is a great way to get out of the rat race but you have to make sure its the thing for you. If it is than Wealthy Affiliate definitely is the way to go. I’ve been a member for almost a year and a half and haven’t had a single regret.

    1. Some might be and definitely more power to them, but I don’t think most of us are. I know I’d rather earn money doing what I like rather than do so on someone else’s timeclock, but some people are just born to do so for one reason or another.

  2. Although I want to say thank you for this article, I’m a bit depressed to realize my relationship with the 21st-century version of indentured servitude…

It’s true, Sales gets a lot of the glory when it comes to the corporate world.  It’s hard not to feel like the bastard child if you’re not in that department sometimes.

It’s funny you mention WA.  I’m currently working toward getting out of the rat race and WA is the platform that I found when doing my research.  I’m loving it.

OK, I guess I will say thank you for this post after all.  I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to help others and offers legitimate, obtainable options vs making empty promises or not offering a solution at all.

Keep it up.  I hope it helps someone in a similar situation down the line.

    Thank you,

    Scot

    1. Hi, Scott, I think a lot of us will realize we’re in the indentured servitude game, but it’s zero reason to be depressed. Realizing is the first step to understanding, and when we understand and accept the fact, it’s easier to work toward a plan to climb out of such servitude and into financial freedom.

  3. This is a great article, so many true statements raised.

I concur whole-heartedly with your thoughts on the corporate world, and its capacity to chew you up and spit you out essentially as they please, I have seen people dealt that hand and it is nasty business.

Personally, I am thankful to have been able to make my own choices career-wise without the gentle nudge out the door.

With the salespeople make the company argument, yes it is true that they play a major part in drawing and retaining customers and clients, but without the internal infrastructure that is often circumvented by salespeople and rules not being adhered to, they wont have a job either.

Now for the important stuff, making your own day and times of work a reality, it is possible.

    1. That’s all the corporate world will do. I have a friend who once told me the higher one’s paycheck in the corporate world, the earlier their death sentence. So freaking true. And yes, I can definitely relate to how nasty it can and does get.

  4. Accepting any job offer makes someone to stop thinking about the inner potential he or she carries. According to the writer, fulfilling someone else dreams is really indentured servitude. One of the reasons why I quit my job is because they dictate when you should wake up. There is nothing like being self employed by becoming your own boss, wake up on your own, work from home or anywhere. It makes you to be fulfilled. Thanks. We need to start investing on our passion

    1. It really does, I agree. The earlier we begin investing in our passions, the faster we can all leave this rat race in droves. Why the hell should a company, or a nonliving entity, which is what a company is for that matter, dictate our lives. Here in the States, we think we’re free until we realize that freedom is just a mirage, and our work-life definitely helps dictate that. The way out is to invest in passion, start our online businesses, and through time we’ll find success, especially when we’re persistent.

  5. This article is loaded with some of the most compelling and practical reasons to be your own boss as I’ve run into.  I was part of corporate America for many years and hardly a day went by without my wanting to ditch the job and do my own thing.  Well, finally after so many years I finally made the decision to do just that.  The feeling of freedom and control over my life is amazing.

I’ll never go back.  I found WA about four months ago and it’s made such a positive difference in my life.  I am spending more time with my family, I have more energy then I’ve had in years, and I have so much more fun in my life, it’s simply a blessing.  I had lost the FUN factor many years ago.  I sleep better and I have a much better and healthier outlook on life in general.

    Great article, thank you!

    1. I wouldn’t go back either, Tim. You’ll have far more energy than you will have when you can wake up and pursue what you’re passionate about rather than wake up and be somewhere on someone else’s time, with someone else’s work, and ultimately, someone else’s problem.

  6. It is very true that many of us are “chained” to our jobs, and usually not enjoying what it is that we do every single day.  Unfortunately, some people actually do not have a choice because of life circumstances and opportunities that have been given to them.

Being able to work for yourself in online marketing and advertising is not easy – thank you for pointing that out.  Many others will state that it is quick and easy to be making money online.  In actuality, it is a lot of hard work and time, even with the help of Wealthy Affiliate.

But your reasons all rang true and give motivation to keep moving forward with it.

    1. Some don’t have a choice because of it, but they can choose to change such circumstances. For me, those are the people I want to reach out to the most.

  7. This is good website to show the difference working and be your own boss. I like the 10 reason, I believe  if you follow your  dreams and you became successful. So my question how to fire your Boss is that before you are financially stabled or while your still building your own business online? My experience  it is to slow to get to the top need hard work and more time working online, but am on it. And I read your website,  lot of helpful tips, guides and ideas to be successful.

    1. It’s very slow and what you want to do is stay with your full-time job for the time being, but use your days off to start your online endeavors. In time, you can scale back a little, bit by bit, before you ultimately can fall back to part-time with your day job and before you know it, can ultimately quit. My tips will continue to come as I help start this movement in America, one that I call Ditching Corporate America and motivating others to start their own endeavors before ultimately firing their bosses.
